Hoodia gordonii is an unusual succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa and Namibia, prized for its upright, fleshy, spiny stems that resemble a cactus. Although it looks very much like a cactus, it belongs to the Apocynaceae family, not the Cactaceae family.

Under favorable conditions, the plant can produce large, fleshy flowers in shades of beige-pink, reddish brown to purple, with a very distinctive appearance. It is a collector’s plant suited to lovers of rare succulents and sculptural-looking plants.

  • African species adapted to very arid environments

  • sculptural, deeply textured stems

  • large, unusual flowers

  • a less commonly found collector’s plant

  • requires little watering

  • suited to succulent and Stapeliaceae collections

  • becomes more branched and spectacular as it matures

The plant is sold exclusively for ornamental use and cultivation. It is not certified for consumption or medicinal use.

The plant is very sensitive to excess water, especially at low temperatures. The stems may have small scars, corky areas, or other cosmetic imperfections resulting from growth and handling, which do not normally affect the plant’s viability. The plant is sold without flowers.
