dendrobium-lindley
Dendrobium lindleyi (syn. aggregatum) - fragrant flowers

Dendrobium lindleyi (syn. Dendrobium aggregatum) is a miniature epiphytic species with fragrant flowers, native to northeastern India, Indochina, Thailand, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and southwestern China. It grows on tree branches, often at elevations of 650–1,400 m. The short pseudobulbs, 5–10 cm long, are thick, slightly ridged, and densely clustered at the base; this is where the former name aggregatum comes from. The plant’s total height is usually 10–20 cm. Each pseudobulb bears one short, thick, apical leaf. The fibrous sheath on new growths should not be removed unless there is an infection or pest infestation.

The flowers are 2–5 cm across, white, yellow, or orange, borne on pendulous stems with 5–15 flowers, sometimes more on a well-established clump. The lip is usually yellow-orange, more intense at the base. The fragrance is subtle and honey-like, easier to notice up close, in the morning or evening. Flowering occurs in winter and spring. The stems do not rebloom; cut them back after they have dried. A plant kept without a cool, dry rest often produces keikis instead of flowers.

Bright, filtered light is essential. A very bright window protected from harsh summer sun works well. Reddish-tinged pseudobulbs usually indicate strong, suitable light; yellow leaves may indicate stress or disease, not just excessive sun. Growing temperatures should be moderate to warm during the day, with milder nights. In winter, a cooler rest helps flowering: nighttime temperatures around 10–15°C, with no frost, and greatly reduced watering.

During the growing period, water thoroughly, then allow the mount or potting medium to dry between waterings. Mounted plants dry more quickly; in a pot, use a coarse, airy mix that does not retain stagnant water. Do not keep the roots constantly wet. During active growth, fertilize with a diluted orchid fertilizer after watering. Do not fertilize a plant with dry or diseased roots.

Mounting on a slab is highly suitable, with a small amount of sphagnum at the contact point to prevent it from drying out too quickly. In a pot, use a coarser-grained, airy orchid potting medium. Handle the roots carefully: they are fragile. When dividing, keep at least 5–9 pseudobulbs on each section.

The winter rest is the critical part. Gradually reduce watering in autumn, stop fertilizing, and keep the plant drier while maintaining good light. The pseudobulbs may remain slightly ridged and some leaves may drop; this does not automatically indicate a problem. Resume normal watering when the flower stems appear and reach a few centimeters, or when spring growth begins. Without this seasonal rhythm, flowering remains poor even if the plant continues to grow.
