Consolea rubescens (Opuntia rubescens) – Road Kill Cactus

Consolea rubescens (frequently synonymous with Opuntia rubescens), commonly known as Road Kill Cactus or Sour Pricklypear, is a tree cactus native to the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, and the Virgin Islands). The name “Road Kill” comes from its flat, elongated pads (cladodes), which look slightly “crushed” and can appear as if they had been run over by a car.

It forms a cylindrical trunk that can become woody over time, with lateral branches made up of flat, oval or lance-shaped pads. These are a deep green that may take on a reddish hue in strong sunlight or on young plants (hence the epithet rubescens = turning red). When grown in a pot, it stays a moderate size; in its natural habitat, it can reach several meters. The flowers are yellow-orange and may turn red, followed by reddish fruits. Many cultivated specimens have almost no large spines, but may have fine glochids.

Easy care:

• Light: Full sun, as much as possible. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for compact growth and good coloration.
• Temperature: Warm. In Romania, it is grown in a pot; overwinter indoors above 8–10°C (sensitive to temperatures below 5°C).
• Watering: Very infrequent. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Almost none in winter.
• Soil: Extremely well-draining, suitable for cacti and succulents.
• Pot: With good drainage holes; it prefers to be slightly pot-bound.
