Clematis 'Princess Diana' is an elegant and distinctive clematis variety, named in honor of Princess Diana of Wales. This climbing plant from the Texensis group is prized for its unusual, tulip-shaped flowers and graceful appearance, reflecting the delicacy and beauty associated with its name.

Flower appearance

  • Shape: The flowers are tubular, resembling a tulip or an elongated bell, with tepal tips slightly twisted outward. This structure gives them a unique appearance among other clematis varieties.
  • Color: The outer tepals are a vibrant, intense pink, often described as fuchsia pink or salmon pink, while the inside is paler, with shades ranging from light pink to white. This combination creates a subtle, attractive contrast.
  • Size: The flowers measure 5 to 7 cm in length. They are smaller than those of large-flowered clematis, but make up for it with their abundance and graceful shape.
  • Flowering period: It blooms from June to September, providing a long-lasting presence in the garden throughout summer and early fall.

Growth characteristics

  • Height: It grows up to 2-3 meters, making it a moderately sized climbing plant, ideal for smaller spaces or vertical supports.
  • Foliage: The leaves are bright green, oval, and slightly glossy, perfectly complementing the delicate flowers.
  • Vigor: It is a vigorous but not overly invasive plant, with slender stems that cling easily to supports.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure: It prefers full sun or partial shade, with its roots protected from direct sunlight (for example, with mulch or low-growing plants at the base).
  • Soil: It needs well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, especially during warm periods, but do not let the soil become waterlogged.
  • Pruning: It belongs to pruning group 3, which means it flowers on the current year's growth. Hard pruning in spring, to about 20-30 cm above ground, is recommended to encourage abundant flowering.

Care and hardiness

  • Hardiness: It is resistant to diseases and a variety of climatic conditions, tolerating temperatures down to -20°C with minimal protection.
  • Fertilizing: Applying a slow-release fertilizer in spring helps support growth and flowering.
  • Special care: Thanks to its Texensis origin, it is more drought-tolerant than other clematis, but still appreciates consistent moisture.

Origin

Clematis 'Princess Diana' was introduced in 1984 by British breeder Barry Fretwell as a tribute to Princess Diana. It is a hybrid in the Texensis group, known for its bell-shaped flowers and natural hardiness inherited from species native to Texas, USA.

Use in the garden

This variety is perfect for adding a romantic, delicate accent to the garden. It can be grown on trellises, fences, pergolas, or even through shrubs and small trees, where its bright pink flowers stand out. It pairs beautifully with white- or yellow-flowering plants, such as roses or lavender, for a contrasting effect.

Height including pot: approx. 75 cm

Note: During the cold season, garden plants are sold without leaves and are pruned to encourage branching.
