Euphorbia japonica (also known as Pine Cone Plant or Pineapple Euphorbia) is a hybrid with a spectacular caudex, resulting from a cross between Euphorbia bupleurifolia and Euphorbia susannae. It is one of the most prized caudex plants thanks to the unusual appearance of its swollen base, which resembles a pine cone or a pineapple.

The plant develops a compact, round or slightly elongated caudex with a distinctive texture resembling the scales of a pine cone. Small, fleshy, deep green leaves emerge above the caudex, forming a compact rosette. During periods of stress or dormancy, the leaves may fall off, leaving the caudex exposed - a highly decorative feature for collectors.

Main characteristics:

  • Spectacular, pine-cone-shaped caudex (the main feature)
  • Small, green, fleshy leaves
  • Exotic and unusual appearance
  • Slow to moderate growth
  • Size: the caudex can reach 8–15 cm in diameter on mature potted plants

Easy care:

  • Light: bright light, with filtered direct sun in the morning or afternoon. It also tolerates bright partial shade, but the caudex develops better in strong light.
  • Temperature: warm. Optimal range: 18–28°C. Does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C for extended periods (protect it in winter).
  • Watering: moderate during the growing season (spring–autumn). Let the substrate dry out well between waterings. In winter, water very rarely or not at all (dry dormancy). It is more sensitive to overwatering than to drought.
  • Humidity: medium (tolerates the dry air in apartments well).
  • Substrate: very well-drained, mineral, and airy.

Substrate recommendation: For optimal caudex development and to prevent rot, a mineral substrate with excellent drainage is recommended. → Professional substrate for cacti, succulents, and Adenium - Secret Garden

This substrate provides the ideal structure for caudex plants, with a high percentage of mineral components.

Uses: An excellent collector's plant, perfect for decorative pots, large terrariums, display cases, or collections of succulent and caudex plants. It looks spectacular on display, leafless or with its rosette of leaves above the caudex. It is highly appreciated by enthusiasts of unusual plants.

Important note: Like all Euphorbia species, this plant contains milky white latex that can irritate the skin and eyes. Wearing gloves when handling it and avoiding contact with the face are recommended. It is not toxic if ingested in small quantities, but should not be eaten.

Euphorbia japonica (Pine Cone Plant) is an excellent choice if you want a caudex plant with a dramatic appearance, easy to care for and with a look very different from classic succulents. A jewel for collectors!

• Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18-25°C and does not tolerate cold below 10°C.

Height including pot: approx. 8 cm
